The Magicians is coming to Television
I read all three of Lev Grossman’s Magician books. It was kind of a mixed experience that I could only evaluate once I’d finished all three. On the plus side it was an unexpectedly original mashup of Harry Potter and Narnia starring disaffected teenagers who eventually grew into disaffected young adults. The story-within-a-story, and the creativity of the universe that Grossman created were what kept me going. But in the end I’m not sure I liked almost any of the characters. And I don’t mean that I didn’t like them, what I really mean is that I kind of didn’t care about any of them. It just didn’t matter to me what happened to them. In that way, the experience was uneven for me.
But now the series is coming to television. And given my obsession with doing good film/tv adaptations of genre stories, I’m very curious what Syfy will manage here. Time will tell.
